Vintage Hot or Not?! Macramé

Every once in awhile I bring home a find that I think is charming and my boyfriend thinks is hideous! I've decided to end the debate by asking the thrifting community to vote Hot or Not on questionable vintage finds.

The questionable find this week is a vintage orange macramé towel holder featuring a large wooden bead. Ahh that magical macramé of the 70s. You've spotted it at the thrift store. Barely recognizable owls. Knotty dangling plant holders. I can only assume that macramé designs were meant to be both pretty and functional. This small and colorful example of macramé would useful in either the kitchen holding a pretty tea towel or in the bathroom holding a 70s hued hand towel. As I've confessed before, I've got a soft spot for 70s kitsch... but does this go too far? It's up to you to decide! But before you vote... just go ahead and say macramé out loud a few times, it's kind of fun! Macramé. Macramé. Macramé.

Vintage Hot or Not!? Macramé

A couple of weeks ago we voted on a vintage owl letter holder. I'd like to say to all the naysayers out there who believer owls are "over" that they're just as hot as ever. I was pretty shocked that this big-eyed owl was voted hot but at the end of the day he took home the win by 76%!

Not only can you vote, I welcome and encourage photo submissions. If you come across something out at the shops and sales that you think is beautiful and someone else thinks is gross, send it to me and we'll feature it in Vintage Hot or Not. Email your finds to atomicbetties@gmail.com with the picture as an attachment. If I use it, I will mention and link to your blog or shop. Not a blogger? I still want to see it! Let the vintage community vote and we'll settle the question of Hot or Not.

  2. For the first time I had to vote "not"! I love to look at these things, I love 'em in theory: but I can never pull them off in a home! I just get sick of seeing them around, despite the fond memories of them sticking around into my 80s-90s childhood.

  3. We're at a tie right now! Van - I'm pretty torn when it comes to macrame too. I saw soooo much of it 70s-80s when I was a kid. We used to have this big macrame that held a light fixture in the living room. It was literally like 5' tall! Some of them take me back and some of them make me wonder if an entire generation was on drugs (which, most of them were!)

Scarlett - Haha.. I was surprised that last owl won at all!

  4. My mum had one of those macrame owls with big bead eyes, sitting on a bamboo branch. Not sure about your towel holder here - it looks like it should 'be' something, but isn't. Again it's got that 'eye of Sauron' vibe to it.
