Getting to Know a Fellow Thrifter - Alyssa Bee and The Lemon Tree

Welcome to a new feature on Atomic Betties! Every week I plan to highlight a blog or a shop that is all about vintage or thrifting. You know how sometimes you read a blog and you're struck by how much you have in common with that person? You instantly want to be friends and you just know that if you lived near each other you'd be thrifting together all the time? Okay, hopefully I'm not the only person who feels that way! I've decided to reach out to the people who's blogs I love and who I feel have so many similar interests that we're destined to be friends =D

The very first person to ever leave a comment on this blog was Alyssa Bee of The Lemon Tree and we've got so much in common that I’m excited to feature her as my first blogging friend.

Over at The Lemon Tree, Alyssa features a wide and random array of items which are amazing! Here’s a mere hint of the great owl jewelry collection she recently shared. All three necklaces are so cool... but that guy on the right - he's ready to thrown down and do some damage! He's like the Robert Dinero of owls. "Are you talkin' to me? Are YOU talkin' to ME?"

If I'm not listening to music on my computer, I'm listening to music on my turntable. Sure, I've got an iPod and my phone can hold a bajillon songs too but nothing sounds as good as a record player. I've got an old Stereophonic Magnavox but check out Alyssa's amazing vintage record player. I want one for every room of my house!

Common interest amongst fellow thrifting bloggers are easy to spot - but when you share a specific item it's always surprising! Check out Alyssa's Sunbeam Mixmaster. I have the exact same one in my kitchen that I use every time I bake.

Thrifting blogs are so great because of the variety of items people discover and because different things fuel our thrifting passion. To learn a little more about Alyssa and her thrifting I asked her three thrift-related questions, which she was kind enough to answer:

What are your three favorite vintage possessions?

1) My perfect condition, floral print Paoli Chair Company rocker from 1970. I found it at a thrift store sidewalk sale marked down to only 5 bucks. It looked like it’d never been sat in- by far my favorite find to date.

2) My Pyrex ‘Golden Classic’ pattern casserole, complete with lid and cradle/warmer. At $9.99, it’s the most I’ve ever spent on a piece, but I’m such a sucker for any Pyrex in that buttery yellow hue.

3) My Penguin ice bucket. There’s something so elegant, yet so kitschy about it. And it’d been on my thrift wishlist for so long, I was overly excited to finally find one at a great price.

Who or what inspires you to thrift?

"When it comes right down to it, I think my wallet has been the biggest source of thrifting inspiration. I crave a good deal, and rarely pay full price for anything. I started making regular rounds to the thrift stores when I was living on my own in college- out of necessity. I needed things like plates, pots and pans, etc. but cringed at retail prices on my student/waitress budget. After learning how much I could save on the essentials- thrifting became a hobby and now I think of it as the ultimate treasure hunt. There are so many wonderful vintage goodies out there just waiting to be rediscovered."

What is the one vintage item you’d love to own but haven’t found yet?

"One thing that I’d love to come across at a reasonable price would be a great mid-century hutch, or sideboard so that I could properly display/store all of my Pyrex! "

I want to thank Alyssa Bee for taking the time to answer my questions and sharing her passion for thrifting with us. I'm sending some good thrifting vibes her way and hoping she comes across that perfect mid century hutch very soon (at a great price, of course!)
